Lucifernum - A CinemaScala Picture
Leave the world behind. Where Bruges meets its shadow stands the Lucifernum. An eighteenth-century house where time has not stood still, but has simply refused to move on. Doctor Retsin lives there among his paintings, his poems and his dead. Upon the walls hang the faces of those who were, those who remain, and those who never truly left. For vampires live in the Lucifernum. Ancient beings with an insatiable hunger for beauty, life force, admiration and immortality. They appear in the paintings. They wander through the rooms. They speak through poems and memories. And as evening falls over Bruges, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell who is watching whom: the visitor gazing at the painting, or the painting gazing back at the visitor. The further Lucifernum opens its doors, the more the outside world disappears. From the mist-shrouded streets of Bruges to the rooms of the house, from beauty to transience, from memory to death. And somewhere along that descent, the question itself begins to change. No longer whether vampires exist. But what a man must do to step out of the shadows without losing his soul.
